Our speaker on this occasion will be the 8th Countess of Carnarvon from Highclere Castle - the setting for ITV’s flagship drama Downton Abbey. Lady Carnarvon will talk to guests about how real life mirrors art as she has written a book about her husband’s great grandmother, Lady Almina, who converted Highclere Castle into a wartime hospital in 1914. In the second series of the television show Downton became a convalescent home for wounded soldiers. Coincidentally, the story also reflects the history of Tylney Hall, originally built as a private mansion in 1898 and which also served as a hospital during the First World War.
After the lunch, Lady Carnarvon will be holding a book signing of her book entitled Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle. So come prepared to hear some of the real story of Highclere Castle and maybe purchase a copy of your own.
The event starts at 12 noon and the price of £37.50 per person, includes the welcome drink followed by a three-course seasonal lunch with two glasses of wine.
