In so many places over the past few days I have been reminded that Christmas is just eight weeks away – in the shops, on social media and of course as our attention at the hotel now turns to bookings and managing this busy period. Christmas is always a very special time and I have fond memories of Christmases both at home with my family and more recently at the hotel with my team and many regular guests. When I look back at both, there are many common themes that made them special – carrying on traditions, the food and drink, lots of genuine hospitality and of course a warm and cosy atmosphere – I still miss the tradition of reaching into my stocking each year!
Christmas at the hotel needs to be planned on a grand scale and with almost military precision – albeit that when it comes to the actual House Party, things are much more relaxed and fun. The process begins in January with a de-brief of all that has taken place with the team and outline plans made for the coming Christmas. Menus are then written, parties planned, entertainment secured and brochures drafted. As the year moves on, crackers are purchased (several thousand in fact), presents are selected for our house party guests and the bookings start to come in. It is around this time of year that my list of checks is getting firmly crossed off – I always aim to ‘have it all done’ before December arrives. Wrapping paper is purchased, chocolates ordered, cards are selected, Christmas puddings are made and decorations are debated – this year we will have more Christmas trees, along with more fresh wreaths and even stockings to hang in the front hall.
It is exciting when we finally arrive at the 23rd December and having served several thousands of guests during the month, the team are on top form to welcome back many familiar faces and newcomers to what we do best, in my opinion – our Christmas House Party. I truly enjoy every minute of it and am proud of what the team delivers over this special time. Whether you can join us for lunch, dinner or indeed residentially during the month, I can assure you of a warm welcome and a very festive atmosphere at all times – I would be delighted to meet you. When it is all over, you may just find me in the library bar enjoying a sneaky festive tipple with my Basset Hound, Oscar.
Merry Christmas to you all!
