This week marks the beginning of a 3 -5 year project at Tylney Hall which the whole Estates Team is involved in, the replanting of our decidous azalea garden, which is situated in between the lake and the bottom of the vista.
The azalea garden is thought to be one of the last areas of the Tylney Hall Garden to be developed in the mid 1930’s by the Cayzer Family. It is of circular design, similar to the rose garden (a future project to be undertaken) with a type of Copper Beach, Fagus Sylvatica ‘Roseomarginat’ as a centre piece, which was lost in the storms of 1987.
To complete this project a total plant requirement of 500-600 azelas are to be planted over 3 years. During the first year of this project approximately 100 plants will be planted using 6 varieties. The varieties which will be used include Cannon’s Double (cream), Irene Koster (pink/white) Glowing Embers (orange), Narcissiflora (light yellow), Arneson Gem (yellow/orange) and Rhododendron Luteum (Azalea Pontica).
The inner circle is the start of this project, myself and the team (a total of 6 gardeners) have marked out the circles and then with bamboo canes using the existing azeleas as a guide marked where the new plants are to go. In the build up to this project over the last few years a small number of ornamental trees have been planted in the outer ring to add further interest including Malus and Sorbus varieties.
Do come and visit us to see how we are getting on with this project. Our gardens are open as part of the National Garden Scheme and our 2012 dates are Sunday 1st April, Sunday 27th May and Sunday 14th October.
