The Sounds of Afternoon Tea

There is something special about the ritual of afternoon tea. The gentle clink of fine china, cream and jam spread across scones, and the unhurried pace of an afternoon well spent. But at Tylney Hall there's another layer to the traditional experience – music.

In Regency England, music was not just used for entertainment but was a crucial accompaniment to daily life. Gatherings were often centred around the piano, where guests would listen, play and connect with one another. An emotional outlet, music allows those creating it or enjoying it to reflect and indulge in their feelings. It was captured so beautifully in the works of Jane Austen, who spent much of her life here in Hampshire. We also see this reflected in modern-day interpretations, such as the hit show Bridgerton, with its string twist on modern soundtracks.

What has changed, of course, is the music itself. Styles, instruments and tastes have evolved with each era. Yet for all that transformation, something essential remains untouched. The presence of live musicians, the immediacy, the skill, and the quiet connection between performer and listener continue to create a sense of occasion that cannot be replicated.

Once a month, our Live Music Afternoon Tea invites guests to step into an experience that feels both timeless and refreshingly present. Held within the Tylney Suite, the setting speaks for itself, with rich wood panelling, softly draped curtains, and sweeping views across the Italian Garden. Of course, no afternoon tea would be complete without a carefully curated selection of sweet and savoury treats. Paired with your choice of tea, or perhaps a glass of something sparkling, the flavours unfold in harmony with the music.
